Kathy Tyers

Kathy Tyers Kathy Tyers has written a lot of books, including several Star Wars novels: The Truce at Bakura, and Balance Point. She has also written over half a dozen short stories for the Star Wars expanded universe. Beyond Star Wars she is best known for her Firebird series of science fiction novels.

Kathy was born in Long Beach, California to parents Dr. H.C. Moore and Barbara Putnam Moore. Her father had been a test pilot in World War II and was also a dentist and jazz musician. Her mother was a flutist and was part of several California orchestras. Later in life she attended Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, the town where she currently resides. She received a degree in microbiology and got a job as a K-12 teacher. It wasn’t until 1983, as a stay at home mom, that she began to write. By 1987 her first novel, Firebird, was published by Bantam Spectra and was followed by several sequels. In 1993 she got the opportunity to write a Star Wars novel, The Truce at Bakura, and it became a bestseller which led to her writing several short stories for the Star Wars EU: “We Don’t Do Weddings” in Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, “A Time to Dance, A Time to Mourn: Oola’s Tale” in Tales from Jabba’s Palace, and “The Prize Pelt: Bossk’s Tale” in Tales of the Bounty Hunters.

Afterwards Kathy began to embrace a spiritual theme in her books, notably in her Firebird series. She did several more projects for Star Wars such as “Tinian on Trial” in Tales From the Empire, “To Fight Another Day” in Star Wars Adventure Journal 6, “Only Droids Serve the Maker” in Star Wars Adventure Journal 10, “Rebel Bass” in Star Wars Gamer 6, and finally Balance Point for the NJO series.
